It’s officially the time of year when everyone starts preparing for warmer weather and lavish green yards!

As we approach better weather, many homeowners begin brainstorming about how best to prepare their grass and landscaping for the upcoming months. Below are a few tips and tricks we’ve learned throughout our time serving the Knoxville and surrounding area. We hope these tips and suggestions allow you to get ahead of the curve (or should we say weeds) to ensure you have a lush yard for 2021!

While the weather in East Tennessee can be sporadic, your lawn watering shouldn’t be. Not having enough water to grow can be a huge strain on your lawn. When you have a stressed lawn, you’re more likely to see crabgrass and other unwanted growth. If you water for an extensive time period (to allow the water to soak into the dirt and roots) two or three times a week, you will see the best results. Also, pro tip: water in the morning! Watering your grass before bed can lead to diseases and fungus while watering in the heat of the day could scorch your plants!

One thing we all want to avoid but can’t…. is weed control. Introducing, pre-emergent weed control. Pre-emergent weed control can be found as granular or as a liquid. Since they both work by coating the seeds of weeds to prevent them from germinating, you can choose whichever of the two options you prefer. For results to be the most effective, the timing of this is essential. You have to begin this process early enough in the Spring that you prevent the weeds from germinating. If you don’t do this before the weed seeds begin germinating, you will miss begin able to treat your first generation of weeds. However, incase you missed the boat, you can still fertilize and mow high to make your grass denser to ensure it’s harder for weed seeds to grow!
